My main role as an IVF nurse coordinator is to make sure that our patients get all the information they need to have a smooth and pleasant experience as they go through the emotional roller coaster of their fertility treatments, whether it is an insemination cycle, IVF or an egg donor recipient cycle.
I am the patients’ liaison to the doctor. I am their cheerleader, their therapist, their main “go to” person in whatever they need as they go through the labyrinth of their fertility treatment.
I teach them how to mix their drugs and how to give them. I order their medications and inform them of their office visits. I let them know what to expect on their appointments with us, whether it’s just for a scan and blood, or it’s their day of egg retrieval or embryo transfer or it’s their insemination day!
I also answer their questions on the phone, respond to their emails, offer them advice and suggestions on whatever they may need. These are just some of my responsibilities as a fertility nurse.
In short, I work with our patients very intimately and develop a close rapport with them that sometimes develops into lasting friendships.
We, as nurses, are in the field of helping people. Working in the field of fertility has given me a chance to make a difference in our patients’ lives.
I still get letters and cards from patients from years past who remember me and are grateful for all that we have done for them; for “creating a family” for them.
I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity that I have been given to be a part of HRC Fertility. I continue to strive to be the best that I can be as a nurse, so that I will be able to continue to serve our patients and make a difference in their lives.
