Dr. Lisa Becht: Can Age Affect My Fertility?
Many women don’t realize that their fertility begins to decline as early as their late 20s. Approximately 20 percent of women wait until age 35 to start trying to get pregnant, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). When trying to get pregnant, age matters. “As women get older, the number of eggs decrease and the quality, meaning how good the egg is, decreases as well,” Dr. Lisa Becht of HRC Orange County recently said during a video segment on age and fertility. “After 35, we definitely know that the number of egg quality is going down. A woman’s ovarian reserve refers to the quantity of her eggs, and diminished ovarian reserve means that the egg number is decreasing. Hormone tests and ultrasound imaging are used to evaluate a woman’s ovarian reserve. DOR usually occurs around menopause, and age is the...

Irregular periods? Unable to get pregnant? More acne than most? More facial hair? Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) may be the culprit. Women with PCOS have an imbalance and dysregulation of hormones, which can lead to not ovulating, missed periods, long cycles, and infertility. Additionally they may have higher than normal testosterone levels which can cause acne and increased facial hair. Insulin resistance can also be common which puts women with PCOS at increased risk of diabetes, prediabetes, and metabolic syndrome. PCOS is a very common cause of female infertility. A PCOS diagnosis, however, does not mean you cannot get pregnant....
