Dr. Wittenberger discusses postpartum body changes.

Parents Magazine recently published an article on common postpartum changes women experience, from hair shedding to skin shifts and changes in body shape. One lesser-known change highlighted in the piece is something many new moms don’t expect: a change in shoe size.

HRC Fertility’s very own Dr. Michael Wittenberger of HRC San Diego was featured in the article, offering expert insight into why this happens. According to Dr. Wittenberger, pregnancy hormones—particularly relaxin and progesterone—play a key role. These hormones loosen ligaments throughout the body, including in the feet. “These hormones, combined with an increase in body mass, can cause flattening of the arch, which leads to an increase in the length and width of the foot,” he explains.

Research shows that 60–70% of women notice their shoe size increase during or after pregnancy. For some, this change is temporary; for others, it may be long-lasting, especially after multiple pregnancies.

While a shift in shoe size may come as a surprise, it’s a completely normal part of the postpartum experience. Wittenberger’s contribution helps demystify this often-overlooked change and reassures new parents that these structural adjustments are both common and expected.

At HRC Fertility, we’re proud to see our physicians helping educate and support women through every stage of reproductive health.
