Gen Z is Panicking About Their Fertility. Should They be?
HRC Fertility was recently mentioned in an article for Women’s Health written by Madeline
Howard titled “Gen Z Is Panicking About Their Fertility. Should They Be?”
About a year ago, Shania Bhopa’s sister asked her, “Have you ever thought about freezing your
eggs?” Like many other Gen Z-ers, Bhopa did not plan to get pregnant soon. Having many
career aspirations, Bhopa wanted to delay possible parenthood until her mid-30s. After having
the conversation with her sister and researching fertility preservation, she decided to freeze her
eggs. While 25 might feel young to freeze your eggs, Bhopa is not alone in being concerned
about fertility. According to a 2023 survey from HRC Fertility, nearly half of Gen Z is worried
about their fertility despite not trying to conceive. This survey unveils the findings of Millennials
and Gen Z showcasing their understanding of the topic of fertility, concerns about their fertility
status, available treatment options, and the desire to have children.
The survey also found that individual family experiences (38.6%) and social media/influencers
(19.4%) are Gen Z’s top drivers of reproductive information and knowledge. Therefore, it’s
important to encourage open conversations surrounding reproductive health. And according to
the Woman’s Health article, “Luckily, thanks to the legwork done by Gen X and millennials,
fertility conversations are more out in the open than ever.”
Companies have also followed this shift in openness regarding fertility. Many organizations like
Apple and Google have started offering health insurance coverage for fertility preservation and
treatments. The survey found that 62.7% of respondents shared that fertility/pregnancy benefits
play a critically important role when selecting a new position. It will be exciting to see more
companies start to provide fertility benefits in the workplace. To learn more about HRC’s survey
