HRC Fertility is proud to announce that Dr. Aileen Portugal will be joining our San Diego practice in September 2026.
Dr. Aileen Portugal is a reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialist dedicated to providing compassionate, individualized fertility care. She is currently completing her fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Washington University in St. Louis and will be joining our San Diego team in 2026.
Dr. Portugal earned her medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she served as Chief Resident. During her training, she received multiple honors for excellence in teaching and clinical care, reflecting her commitment to both patient-centered medicine and mentorship.
Her clinical and research interests include polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), in vitro fertilization (IVF), and improving access to fertility care for underserved populations. Dr. Portugal has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national conferences, with a focus on advancing health equity and enhancing patient quality of life.
A dedicated advocate for inclusive reproductive healthcare, Dr. Portugal holds leadership roles within the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and has helped develop initiatives to expand access and reduce disparities in fertility treatment. She is also actively involved in community outreach and education.
Dr. Portugal is passionate about partnering with patients on their fertility journey, combining evidence-based care with empathy and respect for each individual’s unique goals.

Leadership
- August 2014 – Current: ASRM Access to Care Special Interest Group Vice Chair
Role: To collaborate closely with the chair to drive initiatives that enhance access to reproductive healthcare.
Responsibilities include strategizing on policy advocacy, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, and spearheading educational outreach to reduce disparities in fertility care. - January 2024 – Current: ASRM Center for Policy and Leadership (CPL) Preparing Experts in Reproductive Medicine to Engage Decision makers (PRIMED) Scholars advocacy program
Role: As part of the inaugural 2024 cohort of the PRIMED scholars advocacy program, I gained comprehensive, skill-based training in aspects of policymaking, mastering message crafting and media relations. - October 2023 – Current: Hispanic Special Interest Group, American Society of Reproductive Medicine, Co-Founder
Role: To define the group’s mission and strategic direction, focusing on increasing representation, advocating for research and policy changes to address the health disparities in the Hispanic community and improve reproductive health outcomes. - January 2018 – May 2019: SIUSOM Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, Founder and President
Role: To promote LGBTQ health at SIU SOM by participating at Springfield PRIDE Parade and hosting a booth in which we talk about Sexual Health. - November 2017 – May 2019: Latino Medical Student Association, Founder and President

Role: To monitor student progress in both academics and professionalism which may lead to making appropriate recommendations to the Dean, as well as, counseling the student.

Role: To organize a system-wide Student Summit on Race, Diversity and Inclusion for SIU Systems and to also offer advice to the board of trustees members on ways to promote and celebrate diversity. - September 2016 – Current: Enos Park Neighborhood Improvement Association (EPNIA) member
Role: As a board member of the neighborhood association I help decide where funds will be spent as well as serving on various teams such as community safety/security, beautification, fundraising, events, and outreach. - September 2016 – May 2017: Ob/Gyn Interest Group – Community Service Co-Chair
Role: As community service co-chair I helped coordinate ob/gyn residents, medical students and high school/middle school teachers schedules so that young students could receive their sex-ed talk. - August 2016 – June 2017 – Student Ambassador for SIU SOM
Role: Serve as a student representative to prospective SIU SOM applicants as part of their interview day activities. Deliver the campus and hospital tour for the interviewees, and provide insight into the unique curriculum, academic and social environment, and the student perspective.
August 2015 – June 2017: Gay Straight Alliance- Founder and President
Role: To organize meetings where qualified individuals discuss health issues and needs related to the LGBTQ community in order to promote awareness and eliminate health disparities facing the LGBTQ population.
August 2015 – June 2017: Diversity Committee at SIU SOM
Role: To help organize topics for diversity week in October and promote diversity year-round. I also helped raise awareness of obstacles and benefits medical students face when English is not their first language.
